Control (Joy Dıvısıon) | Film İncelemesi

The film I will review today is "Control" made in 2007, which tells the life of Ian Curtis, the vocalist and writer of the Joy Division group. Before starting the review, I think I should say that, this review will definitely not be an objective review because I am a Joy Division fan. That's why it only creates maybe half of the effect it has on me, on people who have no interest on Joy Division.

Joy Division is a very important band for me, and they have already led Radiohead, The Smiths, Nirvana and many other well-established bands. And they did this with only 2 albums "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer". The music of Joy Division has a very heavy gothic atmosphere, of course, the main reason for this is the psychological problems of Ian Curtis, which I will mention in the review.

First of all, let me underline that the black and white color selection in the movie is really perfect. It perfectly reflects Ian's messed-up psychology, while at the same time presenting us a beautiful example of cinematography. The director starts to put you in that gothic atmosphere at the beginning of the movie and I can say that he is very successful on this.

The movie starts directly with David Bowie's "Drive in Saturday" song, I was overjoyed to hear Bowie. Bowie is an idol, unique artist. There's a lot to say about Bowie but maybe later. Bowie inspired Curtis really too much. The use of music in the movie was fine, it would be absurd to mention the use of music in a musical movie, of course, but Control is not a musical movie in the full sense of it, rather psychological problems are kept in the foreground.

While Ian tries to get rid of his psychological problems due to epilepsy, he tries to keep his relationship on the balance, but he can neither get rid of his psychological problems nor make healthy decisions in his relationship. Trying to heal and survive with drugs, Ian's psychology can't stand after a point and is dragged into collapse, of course, drugs are not the only reason for this drift, but his relationship with his wife effect either. Honestly, even I started to get cold Ian after witnessing the decisions he made about his relationship. I didn't know he was a pathetic loser to cheat on someone who loves him so much. With his overly callous and lack of empathy decisions, Ian kind of plunges himself into the abyss.

Specially, "Love Will Tear Us Apart", one of my favorite pieces of Joy Division, is used in an incredible good time and moment. If I had to pick a favorite scene from the movie, I can easily pick where that piece was played. It was very good to criticize Ian's relationship with the piece written by Ian himself. It's a unique piece that never gets old.

When we come to the end of the movie, we realize that Ian is trying to live with a psychological burden he can't handle anymore. Neither drugs help nor people, it doesn't even help himself anymore. Ian's suicidal thoughts has been evident since the song "New Dawn Fades." Here's part of what he wrote in the piece: "A loaded gun won't set you free... so you say?"
So we can realize that the thought of suicide has been on his mind for a long time, he just doesn't seem to have decided how to do it. Of course, we can't know if suicide right or wrong but I really like what Pearl Jam said in a song about it: "Some die just to live" That's the one sentence that sums it all up.

One of the points that I think is missing from the movie is that it doesn't include pieces such as New Dawn Fades, Decades where Joy Division raise the bar incredible. I was quite surprised when I didn't come across these two pieces, because they are both incredible songs in terms of both lyrical and rhythm. It is very interesting not to.

Joy Division is like an angel who came to music history for a short time. Just like Van Gogh left great works in art history for a short time. Just like Mozart completely changed people's perception of music and left at an early age. Like them, Joy Division too became a leading group with 2 albums that will never be forgotten.

Thanks for reading this far. We mentioned a band that is a touchstone in the name of music. See u till the next shitty review.
